HPV Genotypes 6 and 11

HPV genotypes 6 and 11 are also responsible for squamous papillomas. These infections are among the most common oral infections, typically appearing on the lips, lingual frenum, hard palate, or buccal mucosa (Eversole & Laipis, 1988).

  • ·  These lesions usually appear in a single spot and have variable physical characteristics, and can appear as lesions with wide bases and raised bumpy surfaces, or as long, finger-like projections (Eversole, 2000).
  • They are typically asymptomatic but should be histologically evaluated following laser or surgical excision. Surgical removal has been shown to result in a low rate of reoccurrence, with a 63-91% initial success rate (Ghadishah, 2017).
  • When determining a surgical course of action to remove these lesions, it is important to note that surgically removed patches on the mucosa or lips are prone to reopening when the patient is chewing, making the locus a target for subsequent infections.
