Types of Reactive Soft Tissue Enlargements

Mucocele
A mucocele is a salivary gland duct that has ruptured, allowing mucus to collect.
They often fluctuate in size. Excision is recommended to exclude a salivary gland tumor.
Necrotizing sialometaplasia
Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a salivary gland lesion that usually develops on the hard palate.
Because it may look like a squamous cell carcinoma, a biopsy is recommended for an accurate diagnosis.
Periodontal Abscess
A periodontal abscess is an accumulation of pus around the pocket of the tooth root. Pain, fever, redness and swelling are common. The infection may reach the bone.
Antibiotics are recommended to treat the infection, and the pus should be drained.

Redicular (periapical) abscess
A radicular or periapical abscess is an infection of deep gum tissue that may extend to the tooth pulp.
A root canal or extraction of the tooth is needed to resolve the lesion and infection.
Fibrous hyperplasia
Fibrous hyperplasia is an overgrowth of the epithelial cells and connective tissue. It often results from an ill-fitting denture. An oral yeast infection may occur at the same time.
Treatment involves getting a better fit for the dentures.
inflammatory papillary hyperplasia
With inflammatory papillary hyperplasia, the papillae on the tongue grow excessively and develop lesions. A yeast infection may also occur.
Lesions should be removed, and yeast infections should be treated with an anti-fungal drug.
