- Oral lesions
involve the epithelium and sometimes the connective tissue attached to the
epithelium, explains Eversole (2004).
- Surface
debris white lesions are related to the death of the epithelial tissue.
They are often painful. They could be caused by a burn from hot food, hot
drinks, or chemicals.
- The
leading difference between a soft tissue enlargement and an oral lesion of
the oral mucosa is the size. Soft tissue enlargements are at least five
millimeters in diameter.
- Oral
mucosal cysts are generally well-defined in their borders, non-tender and
slow-growing. The mucosa looks normal unless it is injured.
- The second
part of the evaluation for oral mucosal lesions in the examination. The
exam should include extra-oral and intra-oral examinations.
- The
biggest difference between oral surface lesions and soft tissue
enlargement is the depth or thickness of the problematic area.
- A soft
tissue enlargement has two clinical presentation types. In a reactive soft
tissue enlargement, the swelling develops rapidly. Its growth rate could
be measured in hours, days or weeks.
- When an
oral mucosal lesion is biopsied and found to be cancerous, surgical
removal of the lesion and nearby lymph nodes is indicated.
