Varicella-Zoster Virus

The Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) is another name for human herpesvirus 3, which causes chickenpox. After chickenpox blisters heal, VZV can remain dormant in neurons for decades.

  • ·  Recurrence of VZV from the dormant virus is the cause of shingles. While shingles can occur at any time, aging and impairment of the immune system are factors that promote its reactivation.
  • The lesions that characterize shingles can occur anywhere on the skin and do not present any specific complications to oral health.
  • Being aware of the presence of these blisters in the oral or maxillofacial region is advisable, as they can be extremely painful and cause additional discomfort for individuals undergoing dental procedures.
  • As with other viral infections, weakened immune systems are a precipitating factor for the reactivation of VZV and therefore the presence of shingles should prompt inquiry into the patient’s immune function.
