The variety of tissue types found in the maxillofacial region and the oral cavity provides diverse niches for microbial colonization, as well as many tissue types that are vulnerable to infection.
The mouth provides an added complication for immune defense, in that it is the only anatomical structure where bones penetrate the protective physical barriers that surround most of the body’s structures and are exposed to the environment. This not only allows the bone to become damaged by chemical and microbial insults but also provides a route deep into the facial tissues that can be exploited by infection.
The major objective of this blog is to:
· Provide information on the body’s defenses, the many kinds of microbial species normally inhabiting the oral cavity, and the specific ways in which they can become pathogenic.
Additionally, one crucial theme is the importance of the increased likelihood of immunocompromised individuals developing oral infections, and the increased morbidity and mortality that can result from these infections.
